Poomsae pair hands PH first Asean Games gold

THE POOMSAE mixed pair of Rodolfo Reyes and Jocel Ninobla handed Team UAAP-Philippines its first gold medal in the 17th Asean University Games in Palembang, Indonesia, yesterday.

Reyes and Ninobla, both from University of Santo Tomas, bested Thai and Indonesian foes.

The Filipino jins also scooped three bronze medals courtesy of La Salle’s Rico Mella (male individual poomsae), Far Eastern U’s Juvenile Crisostomo (women’s individual poomsae) and FEU’s Leanarda Landrito, Crisostomo and UST’s Ninobla (women’s team poomsae).

Only the men’s team poomsae failed to land a podium finish.  The Thais and Indonesians secured the gold and silver medals.

Indonesia, meanwhile, spoiled Team UAAP-Philippines bid for a second straight win in women’s volleyball with a 28-26, 16-25, 19-25, 23-25 win.

After Thursday’s rest day, Team PH will take on Thailand Friday before wrapping up its preliminaries assignments against Singapore on Saturday.
