Cignal books quarterfinals spot, ousts Victoria

Cignal-San Beda sealed a quarterfinals seat after an 83-68 rout of Victoria Sports-MLQU in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup Tuesday at JCSGO Gym in Cubao.

The Hawkeyes turned back the pesky Victoria late, turning a close 70-65 lead with 5:02 remaining to a 15-point victory as they finished the game with a 12-3 blast.

Jason Perkins captained Cignal with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds while Andres Cahilig got a career-high 13 markers and three rebounds in the win.

Robert Bolick chipped in 12 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while Byron Villarias had 10. 

“Right now, we’re happy about it. Our first goal was to make it to the quarterfinals. It’s one of our achievements, but still, the boys did a good job. Hopefully, we won’t stop here and we continue to improve,” said Cignal coach Boyet Fernandez as his team stretched its winning run to six and moved to first place with a 6-1 record.

Victoria bowed out of the tournament as it absorbed its sixth loss in seven games.

Aris Dionisio paced Victoria with 12 points and five rebounds while Jayson Grimaldo chimed in 11 markers and 10 boards.
