PSC eyes sports hub down south

War-torn Mindanao gets a chance to become a hotbed for grassroots sporting excellence as the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) envisions several projects there.

PSC chair Butch Ramirez said they would revive the mothballed Mindanao Friendship Games, which would harness the island’s athletic talents and allow it to recover from the war that hit Marawi City.

“We will try to erase the stigma of war and replace it with peace through sports,” said Ramirez. “Sports has been neglected in Mindanao by the previous administrations, now the people of Mindanao will experience it under the term of President Duterte.

PSC Commissioner Charles Raymond A. Maxey will serve as point man for the agency’s new thrust in the region.

Ramirez said the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education committed to support the PSC’s grassroots sport programs.
