LINGAYEN, Pangasinan—Trading blows with seasoned professional boxers turned out to be a blessing for Darwin Boyones.

The 17-year-old from Biñan, Laguna, escaped the wrath of Jet Michael Lotino and progressed to the Luzon finals of the Philippine Sports Commission-Pacquiao Amateur Boxing Cup on Sunday night.

“I caught him off-guard in the last round and took the opportunity,” said Boyones, who is under the stable of famed professional boxing coach Dino Olivetti.

Lotino, 18, narrowly lost the bout on points but his passion and determination earned him the adulation of the crowd.

“This won’t prevent me from trying again,” said Lotino.
