UAAP: Ateneo rips National U nine; La Salle netters unscathed

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo exploded for eight runs in the seventh inning to hammer out a 13-3 victory over National U Sunday in the UAAP Season 74 baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Matt Laurel belted a two-run double to set off the seventh-inning binge that sent the Eagles, who stunned Adamson, 11-5, last weekend, on their way to a second win in three outings.

University of Santo Tomas overwhelmed University of the Philippines, 9-3, in the other game.

In men’s tennis, La Salle rose to 4-0 after a 4-1 triumph over University of the Philippines, while defending champion University of Santo Tomas dumped Ateneo, 4-1. UP toppled Ateneo, 4-1, in women’s play.

La Salle also won in men’s volleyball, crushing Ateneo, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21 at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Christopher Antonio and Kevin dela Vega combined for 26 points as the Archers jacked up their record to 5-3. Red Christensen added 10 points for the Archers, who enjoyed a 14-2 edge in block points.

In the other men’s match, UP came from behind to repulse University of the East, 25-27, 34-32, 25-19, 25-23.

Dominico Lucindo and Samuel Paquiz finished with 19 and 18 markers, respectively, for UP, which posted eight fewer errors with 31.

UE got back at UP in the women’s division with the Lady Warriors pulling off a 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 win.
