SBP chief reaches out to Gilas naturalized prospect Chris McCullough

MANILA, Philippines—Chris McCullough’s wish to wear the Philippine colors got a big boost after Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio got in contact with the amicable American.

The former San Miguel import on Saturday tweeted a screenshot of an article that said he could be a possible naturalized player for the Philippines in international competitions.

“I’m on call,” posted McCullough with the screenshot.

Panlilio had ultimately reached out to McCullough, telling the former Washington Wizard to send him a direct message.

“Chris, please DM me. Thanks,” replied Panlilio.

The SBP is in the process of putting together a naturalized player pool to bolster Gilas Pilipinas’ campaigns in future tournaments.

McCullough, who’s now playing for Anyang KGC in the Korean Basketball League, has been public of his desire to play for the Philippines.

He led the Beermen to the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup despite being a replacement import to Charles Rhodes and was an instant fan favorite in the league.

Back in August during San Miguel’s conquest of the Commissioner’s Cup, McCullough said that he’d take the opportunity to become the naturalized player if given a chance.

Marcus Douthit, the first naturalized player of the Gilas program, also batted for McCullough’s bid as the Philippines’ foreign booster back in September.

SBP has parted ways with long time naturalized player Andray Blatche.
