Go leads rookie cast fueling Benilde drive

Mycah Go was on the verge of panic at the height of San Beda’s siege of St. Benilde last Thursday. The Lady Blazers rookie sensation felt she was letting her team down by not contributing enough to hose down their opponent’s rally.

“I’m usually a calm person, but sometimes you can’t control your emotions especially inside the court,” Go said in Filipino.

St. Benilde coach Jerry Yee had to tell the 18-year-old to take a hold of herself.

“Coach Jerry said I should calm down so I can execute well. If I can’t produce points, I should take on a different role,” Go said. “I’m not a strong spiker like (fellow rookie Gayle) Pascual. So I tried to help the team in other ways.”

She ended up scoring just nine points—compared to 20 by Pascual—but provided defensive stability for the team by making 10 excellent receptions.

Go and Pascual are the twin engines driving St. Benilde’s soaring campaign in the 95th NCAA women’s volleyball.

Go said she’s particularly close to her batch mates like Pascual, Jade Gentapa and Cloanne Mondonedo. Together they have helped St. Benilde assemble a 6-0 start for the sole lead.
