MANILA, Philippines—Coaches aren’t expected to physically lead team drills, but at Columbian, the training regimen starts from the top.

Team governor Bobby Rosales said Dyip head coach Johnedel Cardel set up the workouts and participate in them to better encourage the players who are working in two groups—one bunch training in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

“Coach Johnedel and his staff monitor the workouts and they also participate,” said Rosales as per PBA.ph. “They’re living by example.”

Rosales said the workouts are monitored via Zoom and head trainer Rock Avenido is the one who presides it.

“We divided the team into two groups, with one working in the morning and the other in the afternoon. And we encourage our guys to have their individual training to make sure these guys are fit once the league resumes play.”

The PBA season has been suspended indefinitely due to COVID-19 and the downtime provided the players more than enough time to work on their own at the comfort of their homes

The hiatus, however, has made the Dyip’s wait for top overall pick Roosevelt Adams even longer.

Columbian seemingly struck gold in back-to-back draft classes after it selected Rookie of the Year and scoring champion CJ Perez in 2018.

“He looks to be an all-around player when we see him in practice but of course it’ll still be different when we see him in the game. That’s why we’re excited to see him in the PBA,” said Rosales in Filipino of Adams.

“Many coaches who’s seen him have only good words for him, I hope that he plays well and helps us in our campaign.”
