SBP continues work for 2023 World Cup hosting amid pandemic
MANILA, Philippines—The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas continued to put in the work towards the Philippines’ hosting of the 2023 Fiba World Cup even amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
SBP, though, said it has made sure to follow the government guidelines and adopted a “Better Safe than Sorry” approach with its members and officials all working from home during the pandemic.
“Video conference are held between SBP and Fiba/ Fiba Asia/ stakeholders such as Playing Venues/ Hotels/ Event Suppliers on various programs and projects, including but not limited to preparations for the 2023 Fiba Basketball World Cup,” said the SBP in a statement Thursday.
The Philippines will co-host the 2023 World Cup with Japan and Indonesia.
The SBP is operating under the official advisories of Fiba, which issued a circular on May 8 advising National Federation members “to follow WHO [World Health Organization] directives, including Mass Gathering Guidelines as well as instructions issued by your public authorities.”
Apart from its preparations for the World Cup, the SBP is also holding video conferences for the Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers as well as the planned holding of e-sport basketball tournaments under the guidance of the sport’s governing body.
The SBP has also been conducting consultation meetings with its regional directors regarding grassroots programs.
Activities, events, games, clinics, and workshops that the SBP initiated have been suspended to prevent mass gatherings.
