Viloria vows to get back at Romero on May 13
BRIAN Viloria tries to get the monkey off his back when he tangles with Omar Niño Romero for the third time on May 13 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
“It’s personal,” Viloria told sports scribes during yesterday’s phone patch interview at the Solar Sports headquarters in Mandaluyong. “I want to correct things.”
Viloria, who failed to beat Romero in two light flyweight division fights in 2006, will be staking his WBC flyweight crown against the Mexican this time.
The underdog Romero beat Viloria by unanimous decision in their first meeting and then forged a majority draw in their rematch three months later. That verdict was later changed to no-contest after traces of illegal substance was detected in Romero’s urine sample.
Now, Viloria wants to exact revenge and prove that he’s improved a lot.
Already impressive in his eighth-round stoppage of the highly rated Giovani Segura last December, the Filipino-American promised an even better performance.
“I’m in better shape—better physically and mentally,” said Viloria. “They (fight fans) will see the best Viloria.”
The 31-year-old Vilora said he’d thoroughly studied Romero and knows what to do in their 12-round tussle to be shown by pay-per-view in the United States and Mexico.
“I just need to be aggressive, throw combinations, be smart and cut the ring off,” said Viloria (30-3 with 17 KOs), who will arrive on Friday.
The 35-year-old Romero (31-4-2 NC) and his entourage will be arriving on May 6.
