Loyola Meralco, Kaya in key duel for UFL lead

POWERHOUSE sides Loyola Meralco and Kaya dispute top spot today when they collide in a crucial United Football League clash at the University of Makati field.

With the two sides tied with Global on top with 31 points with five games remaining, the 4 p.m. clash could potentially decide the title race.

The two teams also go into the match knowing that a draw could open the door for Global to gain control again.

Stallion looks to move closer to the Top 3 when it clashes against Pasargad in the first match at 2 p.m.

Boosted by the return of captain Ruben Doctora and midfielder Park Bo-bae, Stallion Giligan’s is eyeing a better result against Pasargad this time, after it was held to a scoreless draw in their first round meeting.

The Sparks have gotten the better of Kaya in their last two meetings, but the 2011 UFL Cup semifinalists are determined to turn the tide in their latest duel.

Loyola rallied from three goals down to nip Kaya, 5-4, in the UFL Cup semifinals, before posting a 2-0 win in the first round.

The urgency is palpable with Kaya defender Anton del Rosario saying that he is treating the clash as a championship match, while teammates Jason Sabio and Jonahan Romero consider it as the biggest match of Kaya’s season.

“It’s do-or-die,” said Romero,referring to the match that actually pits the league’s best attack in Loyola and the best defense in Kaya.

The Sparks have scored league-high 48 goals, while Kaya has given up just 12 goals.

“Loyola is a talented side. I have a great deal of respect for them,” said Sabio.

Kaya would have to deal with the attacking trio of Phil Younghusband, James Younghusband and Mark Hartmann, who have combined for 36 goals this season.

With 17 goals already under his belt, Phil Younghusband expressed confidence that the Sparks can pull through.
