Gary Bejino misses 400m freestyle final in Tokyo Paralympics

MANILA, Philippines—Gary Bejino finished last among 13 swimmers in the heats and failed to advance to the final of the men’s 400-meter freestyle S6 in the Tokyo Paralympic Games Thursday at Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

The Filipino bet clocked in at 5:52.28 and placed sixth in Heat 1 and needed to wait for the results of Heat 2 to determine if he would make the final cut.

Only the eight fastest swimmers in the preliminaries would qualify for the medal round.

Brazil’s Talisson Henrique Glock topped the qualifiers when he clocked in at 5:06.28 in Heat 1 while Russian Paralympic Committee’s Viacheslav Lenskii, who was also in Heat 1, came in at second overall at 5:11.07.

Antonio Fantin of Italy and Juan Jose Gutierrez Bermudez of Mexico, who were both in Heat 2, clocked in at 5:12.08 and 5:14.10, respectively, to get to third and fourth place.

RPC’s Andrei Granichka, who swam in Heat 1, clocked in at 5:15.38 to get to fifth place overall while Mexico’s Raul Gutierrez Bermudez, the older brother of Juan Jose, clocked in at 5:26.10 in Heat 2 for sixth place in the qualifiers.

Cuba’s Lorenzo Perez Escalona clocked in at 5:26.57 in Heat 1 for seventh place while Daniel Videira of Portugal finished eighth overall with a time of 5:26.88 in Heat 2.

Bejino’s final event in Tokyo is the Men’s 100m backstroke S6 on Friday.
