Gilas Women demolish Maldives by 82 points in Fiba Asia U18
MANILA, Philippines — Louna Ozar poured 22 points as Gilas Pilipinas Women’s youth team annihilated Maldives, 110-28, to complete a Group A sweep and earn an outright semifinals berth in the Fiba U18 Women’s Asian Championship Division B on Wednesday at Koramangala Indoor Stadium in India.
Ozar shot 11-of-15 from the field, including a lay-up that gave the Philippines an 85-point lead in the final 24 seconds of the game, 110-25, and had four steals, three rebounds, and two assists to sweep the group stage.
Article continues after this advertisementRyhanna Calvert and Liane Ashley Loon had seven steals each as the Filipinos tallied 40 in the game and forced Maldives to 64 turnovers where they scored 67 points.
Calvert finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Kate Bobadilla also scored 17 points. Loon chipped in 14 points, eight boards, eight assists, and a block, while Kalynee Reigne Abraham posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The semis will start on Saturday and the Philippines needs to rule the tournament to get promoted to Division A.
Article continues after this advertisementMaldives held Gilas to a 6-6 start before the latter unleashed 15 straight baskets to end the opening quarter, 21-6, and extended it to a 22-0 run for a 28-6 advantage off a Camille Nolasco’s bucket in the 7:26 mark of the second quarter, entering the break with a 54-13 lead.
The Filipino squad unloaded a 16-0 start in the third quarter for a formidable 70-13 spread after a triple from Calvert in the 4:10 of the quarter.
Maldives shot 10-of-40 from the field suffering another blowout loss for its third straight game.
Ana Aminath Simad was the lone bright spot for Maldives with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting as they will be relegated to the classification stage.
