POC balks at hosting Asian Beach Games
MANILA, Philippines–HOSTING THE 2014 Asian Beach Games will boost the country’s image but the $1-million cost needed to stage it may be too stiff for the Philippine Olympic Committee.
“Other countries will not waste the chance of hosting the Beach Games because of the prestige it brings,” said Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco yesterday.
“The image of the country is not good. We need these events to [improve] our image.”
Cojuangco, however, said the hosting the biennial event featuring athletes from at least 40 countries requires a huge budget.
To make a formal bid, Cojuangco said the POC needs to produce $30,000 up front, plus another $180,000 as official entry fee once the bid has been accepted.
The OCA will also require the host country to raise $1 million to guarantee a trouble-free hosting of the Games, which were first held in Bali in 2008. June Navarro
