NCAA: Hard work paying off for Benilde guard Migs Oczon

MANILA, Philippines—Already known for his scoring prowess, Migs Oczon took his offensive game to the next level as College of St. Benilde tightened its hold of the top spot in the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament.

His hot shooting propelled the Blazers to a 7-1 record following wins over Mapua and San Beda the past week.

Oczon, the former National University Bulldog, is averaging 15.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in six games but his performances in the past week have been nothing short of stellar.

In Benilde’s victories against Mapua and San Beda, the six-foot guard normed 16.5 points on a blistering 53 percent clip from downtown and 4.5 rebounds.

Most recently, Oczon scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter in a 78-69 win over San Beda which marked St. Benilde’s first victory over the Red Lions in almost eight years.

“We needed to score so whenever I had the chance to shoot, I took it. I got confident with it and I worked on it in the off-season and it paid off,” said Oczon, who was named Collegiate Press Corps Player of the Week.

“We treat each game as regular games and we take them one at a time. Every preparation of ours will remain the same as a team,” he added.

Oczon bested teammate Miggy Corteza, Jose Rizal University’s Marwyn Dionisio and Joshua Guiab, Letran’s Fran Yu and San Beda’s James Kwekuteye for the weekly plum presented by the Philippine Sports Commission.
