NCAA: San Sebastian Stags, Mapua Lady Cardinals score first win
MANILA, Philippines—San Sebastian and Mapua barged into the win columns of the NCAA Season 98 men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments, respectively, at San Andres Complex on Friday.
The Golden Stags swept the Lyceum Pirates, 25,15, 25-17, 25-21, behind the team’s collective efforts in men’s play.
Article continues after this advertisementBaste relied on the troika of Kyle Vilamor, Lheann Yape and Jerick Cagang who scored 13, 13 and 11 points respectively to notch their first win for a 1-1 record.
Lyceum did not have a double-digit scorer with Jeric Porto scoring only eight points and Earl Polis with seven. The Pirates fell to 0-2 for the season.
Mapua, meanwhile, escaped Letran in five sets, 25-19, 25-16, 14-25, 24-26, 16-14, in the women’s division.
Article continues after this advertisementRoxie Dela Cruz’s 21-point outburst fueled Mapua to its first win. Nicole Ong and Chenie Batac also contributed 11 and 10 to their names, respectively.
Julienne Castro of the Lady Knights, who tripped to a 1-1 record, registered a team-high 15 markers while Lea Tapang finished with 14 points, all by way of successful spikes.
Mapua’s male counterpart, however, fell to Letran in five sets, 25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 17-25, 13-15.
Barbie San Andres’ 26 markers were put to waste for the Cardinals.
Michael Doria led the Knights with 19 markers. Vince Himzon helped the cause with 18 of his own while Justine Alejando had 16.
In other games, the Lady Pirates made quick work of the Lady Stags, 25-14, 25-16, 25-21, to remain unscathed in women’s play after two games.
Jewel Maligmat and Johna Dolorito both tallied 10 markers for Lyceum to improve to 2-0.
Katherine Santos was the sole double-digit scorer for Baste with 10 markers as the lowly Lady Stags remained at the bottom of the pack with a 0-2 slate.
