Over 2,000 cops barred from taking selfies at Fiba World Cup

MANILA, Philippines — Police officers who will be detailed in the venues of the upcoming Fiba World Cup are prohibited from asking international athletes, especially famous players, to take photos or “selfies” with them.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) issued the directive to remind cops deployed at sites where the games will be held from August 25 to September 10, 2023.

“Bagamat kahit ang mga pulis po ay fan din po yan ng mga basketball players, especially ng mga NBA players po, we will continue reminding our personnel to refrain from making selfies doon sa ating mga familiar faces,” PNP Spokesperson Colonel Jean Fajardo said on Wednesday.

Fajardo also reported police had been dispatched to airports and billeting areas since players and delegates started arriving on August 17.

“Sa ngayon po ang ating nga contingency planning at yung ating mga simulations exercise ay tuloy tuloy po, bilang paghahanda dito nga po sa duration, not only for the opening this coming Friday, but for the whole duration po ng Fiba,” she gave an update.

(Right now, our contingency planning and simulation exercises are continuous, in preparation for the duration, not only for the opening this coming Friday but also for the whole duration of Fiba.)

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is dispatching more than 2,225 personnel for the World Cup.

They will look after the security of the participants and the audience.

The security operations will be led by the Site Task Group (STG) Metro Manila FBWC 2023 team.

PNP is urging all operatives assigned to focus solely on public safety.
