UST Golden Spikers beat NU Bulldogs UAAP Season 86 men's volleyball

MANILA, Philippines — University of Santo Tomas snapped the defending champion National University’s 34-game winning streak with a rousing 25-23, 26-24, 25-19 victory in the UAAP Season 86 men’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Reigning MVP Josh Ybañez led the collective effort of UST with 13 points, seven digs, and five excellent receptions to start their redemption tour on a high note and dealing NU’s first loss in five years.

Paul Colinares and Jay Rack Dela Noche chipped in nine points each. Flor Rainer had eight points including three blocks, while GBoy De Vega added six points highlighted by the match-winning ace to end the game in 77 minutes.

“I’m very happy that the team responded well to our preparation,” said UST coach Odjie Mamon. “The team responded with patience and discipline to our teachings, techniques, and tactics. They showed their composure and played their hearts out.”

It was NU’s first loss since the opening day of Season 81 last February 16, 2019 when it fell to Far Eastern University, 25-12, 25-16, 25-19.

The Bulldogs missed Michaelo Buddin due to an injured right thumb with Nico Almendras and Jade Disquitado stepping up with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, Dryx Saavedra powered FEU with 16 points on 15 attacks and one ace to sweep the University of the Philippines, 25-23, 25-17, 25-15.

Jelord Talisayan and Martin Bugaoan also contributed for the Tamaraws with 11 points each.

“We seized the moment. That’s what I want my players to always do, enjoy the game,” said FEU coach Eddieson Orcullo.

UP has no double-digit scorers with Louis Gamban leading the way with seven points laced with five excellent digs. Jessie Rubin and Angelo Lagando added five points each.
