Carlos Yulo triumphed on Saturday in the men’s floor exercise of the gymnastics in Paris for only the second Olympic gold in the history of the Philippines.

The 24-year-old broke down in tears after matching the achievement of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who won gold at the COVID-delayed 2020 Tokyo Games.

Carlos Yulo successfully delivered Team Philippines’ first gold medal in the Paris Olympics 2024, ruling the men’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise final at Bercy Arena on Saturday night (Manila time).

Yulo tallied 15.000 points as the third gymnast competing in his pet apparatus, sufficient for a gold medal finish–the first of the country in this year’s Olympics and second overall after Hidilyn Diaz Naranjo’s breakthrough gold in Tokyo. FULL STORY

  • Great Britain’s Jake Jarman tallies 14.933 points. Carlos Yulo is assured of a medal finish!
  • 14.500 for Milad Karimi of Kazakhstan. Three gymnasts left. Yulo is still at the top.

  • 13.933 for Boheng of China. Four gymnasts left.
  • Carlos Yulo tallies 15.000 points! He leads over Dolgopyat and Zapata. He is currently the leading gymnast, as of writing.
  • Carlos Yulo is next. He needs at least 14.333 points to be in the medal conversation after Zapata and Dolgopyat.
  • Artem Dolgopyat is next. The Israel bet, who won gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, tallies 14.966 points.
  • Rayderly Zapata of Spain goes first in the floor exercise final. He tallies 14.333 points.

Carlo Paalam was shown the door in the men’s 57kg division at the Paris Olympics 2024 after losing an ultra-tight quarterfinal duel late Saturday (Manila time) against Australia’s Charlie Senior.

Senior defeated Paalam, 3-2, in a dramatic battle that featured furious exchanges in the final two rounds after a tentative start by both boxers in their quarterfinal duel at North Paris Arena. FULL STORY

MANILA, Philippines—Team Philippines’ EJ Obiena overcame a shaky start to secure his spot in the Paris Olympics 2024 men’s pole vault final on Saturday.

Obiena moved on to the final of the men’s pole vault for his second straight Olympics stint after clearing 5.75 meter, good for the seventh seed overall and sixth in Group A.

Only the Top 12 after qualifications earned a seat in the medal round. The final is set for August 6 at 1 am (Philippine time). FULL STORY

EJ Obiena, one of the Philippines’ top medal hopes in Paris, begins his campaign in the athletics men’s pole vault competition. Participants need to clear the 5.80m standard or be among the top 12 performances after the qualification.

  • Pole vaulters packing up. Waiting for official rankings of the qualified athletes. EJ Obiena is through to the final round in his second straight Olympics stint.

  • Duplantis now attempts 5.75m. And he effortlessly jumps over it
  • 5.75m now for EJ Obiena… and he EASILY clears it! The Team Philippine bet is on a roll right now after clearing 5.70m earlier.

  • UPDATE: Four pole vaulters have succumbed to the 5.70m bar in Group A (Simen Guttormsen, Jacob Wooten, Anthony Ammirati and Robert Sobera). That puts Obiena well at the eighth overall spot, as of writing. (7th in group). Only 12 advance to the Finals.

  • EJ Obiena at 5.70m… CLEARED. Just like that. Obiena is one of the leaders in Group A.
  • Obiena opts to pass on a third attempt at 5.60m. Next up for the competition is the 5.70m bar.
  • Second attempt at 5.60m for Obiena and still couldn’t clear it.
  • EJ Obiena jumps… but can’t clear 5.60m on his first attempt.
  • Here we go. Obiena has his warmers off. So does Duplantis. Looks like they’re both jumping off at 5.60m
  • Emmanouil Karalis of Greece, who passed on the 5.40m bar along with Obiena and Duplantis, successfully passes the 5.60m bar.
  • Australia’s Kurtis Marschall is the first to clear both the 5.40 and 5.60m bars successfully in first attempts.
  • EJ Obiena just passed on jumping at the 5.40m. And so did Mondo Duplantis. Next height after 5.40m is 5.60m.
  • For context, this Group A in the pole vault events has Kendricks (No. 3), Mondo Duplantis (No. 1) and EJ Obiena (No. 2). That’s three of the world’s best in one Group, alone
  • World’s No. 3 Sam Kendricks of USA also easily clears 5.40m. Easily.
  • Menno Vloon (NED) opens the qualificationS as the first pole vaulter. He failed to clear 5.40m. Kurtis Marschall of Australia shows them how it’s done by easily clearing the same height. Obiena will have ample time to wait as the 13th pole vaulter of Group A.

MANILA, Philippines—Team Philippines’ Nesthy Petecio was overcome with a sense of urgency in her Round of 16 bout in the Paris Olympics 2024 57kg women’s boxing tournament.

MANILA, Philippines—Team Philippines’ Joanie Delgaco may not have notched a medal finish in the Paris Olympics 2024’s women’s single sculls rowing event but she’s still bringing home some good news.

She finished as the 20th best rower of the Summer Games after her classification race at Nautical St – Flat Water on Friday afternoon (Manila time) with an official time of 7:43.83 minutes. FULL STORY
