Charly Suarez demands ordered rematch as Navarrete eyes unification
In a sport where controversy is common, Filipino contender Charly Suarez is fighting a new battle outside the ring. Despite the World Boxing Organization (WBO) ordering an immediate rematch with super featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete, Suarez’s camp has filed a formal grievance to secure the fight, fearing the champion will pursue a different path.

The Source of the Dispute
The conflict originates from their May 10 title fight, initially awarded to Navarrete by technical decision after an eighth-round stoppage due to a cut. Video evidence later proved the cut came from a legal Suarez punch, not an accidental headbutt. The California State Athletic Commission overturned the result to a “No Contest,” prompting the WBO’s rematch order.
Now, Suarez’s team alleges that Navarrete’s promoters are negotiating a unification bout with IBF champion Eduardo Nunez for February 2026, which would bypass Suarez’s mandatory challenger status.
The Core of the Grievance
Suarez’s manager, Rick Navalta, filed the grievance on December 8 to ensure the WBO enforces its own order. “We want to make sure all procedures and protocols are done correctly,” Navalta stated. The WBO has acknowledged the complaint, with a resolution expected within two weeks.
Navalta insists his fighter is focused solely on the rematch and is not currently entertaining a financial “step-aside” offer to allow a Navarrete-Nunez fight to proceed. For the 37-year-old Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs), this represents his clearest and likely final chance at a world title.
Statements from the Camp
While promoters and Navarrete’s team have been quiet, Suarez’s camp is vocal. Trainer Delfin Boholst emphasized the need for clarity: “That’s what we are asking for, that there should be a rematch so it becomes clear who the true champion is.”
Suarez himself remains disciplined, stating, “I am just doing my duty as a boxer to train and prepare if we are granted to fight again for the world championship.”
What Comes Next?
The WBO faces a straightforward but impactful decision: uphold its rematch order and enforce Suarez’s mandatory position, or allow the politics of the sport to prevail by sanctioning a unification bout first. The outcome will test the organization’s authority and define the legacy of both fighters.
