Karl Eldrew Yulo chasing Olympic dreams with ‘low expectations’

MANILA, Philippines—Karl Eldrew Yulo, the younger brother of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos, recently found glory as one of the rising stars in gymnastics.

As an up-and-comer, competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is top of his checklist as he continues to hone his craft.

However, as someone who’s seen the struggles of his brother up close, the younger Yulo knew not to get ahead of himself.

“Right now, I have low expectations because I know I’ll be facing a lot of top-notch talents, but I also know I’ll learn and have lots of room for improvement,” Yulo said in the PSA Awards at Manila Diamond Hotel, where he was among the recipients of the Tony Siddayao Award, on Monday night.

“I’ll just go with the flow. I’ll go with whatever God has planned because I know His plans are bigger.”

In the 2025 Junior World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, which was his first global competition, Yulo snagged two bronze medals.

The 17-year-old dynamo stamped his mark by finishing on the podium of the horizontal bar and floor exercise events on home soil.

“I was super proud of that moment because it was my first time in the Junior World’s and somehow, we were able to get two medals,” he said.

“I’m proud and I learned a lot of lessons.”
