MANILA, Philippines–RJ Abarrientos was named the Best Player of the Conference for the PBA Commissioner’s Cup after a breakthrough campaign for crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra.

Abarrientos beat out NLEX’s Robert Bolick and San Miguel Beer’s June Mar Fajardo for the coveted award, the biggest of his young career in the country’s big league.

The former import in the Korean Basketball League before returning home captured the BPC in just his fifth conference.

He garnered 1,147 points through statistics (462) and votes from the media (592) and players (93). Bolick was second (804) while Fajardo placed third (573).

Also nominated were Phoenix’s Ricci Rivero (431) and Jerrick Ahanmisi (421), who played the conference with Terrafirma before being shipped last week to San Miguel.

Abarrientos took the award despite placing third in stats behind Bolick (483) and Fajardo (480). That’s because Bolick and Fajardo’s teams were eliminated during the quarterfinals, paving the way for Abarrientos to have a clear run for the award.

He was tops among the media and players in the voting.

By winning the BPC, Abarrientos now joins Fajardo as candidates for the MVP of Season 50. Fajardo became the best player during the Philippine Cup.
