UAAP calls for prompt, thorough probe into Ateneo players’ deaths

MANILA, Philippines—The UAAP on Sunday called for a prompt and thorough investigation into the deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
In a statement, the league said it continues to monitor developments surrounding the June 8 tragedy in Dipaculao, Aurora, during the Blue Eagles’ training camp.
UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag earlier said the league is awaiting official reports before determining whether sanctions will be imposed, stressing the need for due process and reliance on findings from relevant authorities.
The UAAP said it would take into account the findings of the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, the Commission on Higher Education and Ateneo de Manila University, but noted that “only limited details have been officially confirmed.”
“We urge all concerned agencies to conduct a speedy and thorough investigation in order to put all speculations to rest,” the UAAP said.
“The UAAP is closely following all developments surrounding this tragic incident and carefully reviewing the findings of the ongoing investigations as they come. When completed, all relevant information will be referred to the seven other member schools for a full and fair review.”
The association also said it would enforce sanctions in cases where breaches of established protocols, laws and regulations are found.

It also committed to reviewing existing rules and policies to strengthen accountability, student-athlete welfare and safety standards, while expanding access to mental health resources and support services for athletes, coaches and staff.
“As a community of educational institutions, we are committed to learning from this tragedy and working together to strengthen safeguards that protect our student-athletes both on and off the field of play,” the statement said.
