Lady Maroons, Warriors end UAAP volleyball slump

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines ended a streak of 16 consecutive losses with a 25-18, 25-15, 18-25, 25-27, 15-6 victory over University of the East yesterday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

It was the first win by the Lady Maroons, who have seven rookies on their revamped roster this season, since hammering out a 25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 25-18 decision also against the Lady Warriors on Feb. 5, 2011.

A losing run also ended in men’s play as UE snapped a two-year, 24-game skid with a 13-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 15-10 squeaker over UP as Angelo Torres and Homer Lauresta combined for 34 hits.

In the other men’s match, last season’s runner-up University of Santo Tomas scored a 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23 win over La Salle.

Meanwhile, Far Eastern University’s men’s team and Ateneo’s women’s squad beat their respective foes at the start of football competitions at Ateneo’s Erenchun Field.

The Tamaraws ripped the La Salle Green booters, 3-0, with Jesus Meliza scoring twice before Noli Chaves added another.

In the women’s match, the Lady Eagles blanked the UP Lady Maroons, 2-0, behind two late goals by Anne Theresa Martin.

In the first men’s match, Ateneo and UE played to a scoreless draw.
