GlobalPort import Sharpe fined by PBA for ‘inappropriate public behavior’

/ 02:07 PM March 20, 2013

MANILA, Philippines — For his “inappropriate public behavior,” GlobalPort import Walter Sharpe, who incidentally is on his way out, has been fined P40,000 by the PBA Commissioner’s office on Wednesday.

Sharpe has already been requested by no less than the Batang Pier team owner Mikee Romero to be sent home as a photo of the import lying on a pavement  allegedly drunk circulated the Internet Monday.

The photo reportedly was taken at the parking lot of a chain of bars and restaurants in Ortigas, Pasig City.

“As ambassadors of the league and role models to the youth, PBA players, local and imports alike, are advised to observe proper on court and off court decorum at all times,” said league commissioner Salud in a statement.

Following last week’s incident regarding erstwhile-Petron import Renaldo Balkman, Salud also took the opportunity to remind the other reinforcements of the conduct expected of them while playing the league.

“…the PBA’s member-teams have engaged their services as professionals both for the purpose of winning games for their ballclubs and representing the values and principles these ballclubs stand for. They are thus expected to always conduct themselves decently and professionally,” Salud added.

Salud added that Sharpe cited his poor performance in GlobalPort’s last game as “his explanation for the incident.”

Sharpe, who replaced Justin Williams, only managed two points and five rebounds before fouling out early in the Batang Pier’s 85-93 loss to the Alaska Aces last Sunday night.

“His conduct caused and aggravated by the factor of inebriation that resulted in his passing out in a public premise is considered inexcusable,” Salud said.
