Smart Gilas Pilipinas cruises past Hong Kong


Smart Gilas Pilipinas banked on a second-quarter surge to breeze past host Hong Kong, 85-58, Wednesday night in the 19th Super Keung Sheung Cup at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wanchai, Hong Kong.

Niño Canaleta scored nine of his 15 points from long range to help the Philippines go 2-0 in the tournament.

The Nationals outscored Hong Kong, 24-9, in the second quarter to lead, 37-19, at the half.

Hong Kong never recovered as the Philippines sustained its strong play in the second half, stretching its advantage to 39, 71-32, heading into the final frame.

Kevin Alas added 14 points while Ronald Pascual tallied 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Philippines faces Malaysia Thursday in its next game.
