As promised by top Cebuano boxing promoter Sammy Gello-ani, the show will indeed go on today after the two protagonists of the Daytime Boxing 2: Thai Invasion showed up in tiptop form for their official weigh-in yesterday at the CCTN Compound in Mabolo.
Despite the trouble that hounded the travel plans of the boxers from the Kokiet Gym of Thailand, their contingent led by world title fighter Tersdak Jandaeng finally arrived late Friday night after more than a half-day's worth of plane and bus rides.
Jandaeng will fight Dipolog-native Joel Dela Cruz for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental Lightweight Championship in the main event at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex. Both fighters tipped the scales at 129 pounds.
According to Gello-ani, explosive matchups are to be expected especially with the caliber of up-and-coming talents in the different matches. The other Filipino boxers set to fight their Thai foes are Federico Catubay of Zamboanga and Rolando Magbanua of Cotabato.
Catubay will take on Sirichai Kokietgym while Magbanua will face Thiti Sithkosol. Marvin Sonsona, also of Cotabato, will fight Erwin Picardal of Baguio City in another bout.
The Cotabato-based boxers have a hefty following led by North Cotabato Vice Governor Manny Piñol, who accompanied his boxers. He also divulged that world-class trainer Nonito Donaire Sr., the father of world champion Nonito Jr., will be putting up a boxing gym in Cebu, which will be supported by sportsman Jonathan Guardo.
Seven Cotabato-based fighters are set to be transferred here to be trained by Donaire.
The other matches pit Eric Canoy vs Noel Sungahid; Rey Labao vs Mike Tumbaga; Jerry Pahal vs Romano Gelug and Rolando Magallano vs Sebusa Gonzalo. Correspondent Jonas Panerio
