Petron beach volley: Bautista-Laborte favored

MANILA, Philippines—Ten teams, led by the formidable Nerissa Bautista and Sheryl Laborte, will see action in the third leg of the 2008 Petron Ladies Beach Volleyball Tournament, which gets going Friday at the University of the East-Caloocan campus.

The tandem of Laborte, a former champion with Jenny Torres, and Bautista, who has been making waves in the indoor circuit, is one of the most accomplished pairs competing in the July 25-26 tournament.

A cash prize of P10,000 and a berth into the Battle of Champions tournament later this year will go to the champion.

“It’s hard to say who’s the favorite to win,” said tournament organizer Tisha Abundo, who graced the weekly PSA Forum Tuesday at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch with Petron executive Pat Avancena Lota. “They all have the potential to become champs.”

The 10 teams will be divided into two groups of five squads each playing in a single round robin.

The UE tandem of Abigail Escandor and Jimberly Dizon won the first leg also held at UE-Caloocan, while UP standouts Danielle Michiko Castańeda and Leah Acepcion bagged the second leg title held in Puerto Princesa City.
