MANILA, Philippines—Phoenix guard RR Garcia drew well-deserved praise following the Fuel Masters’ first win in Group B of the PBA Governors’ Cup.

Garcia played an instrumental role in Phoenix’s escape act against Blackwater, 119-114, and his coach Jamike Jarin certainly didn’t leave the veteran guard’s efforts unnoticed.

“We all know that RR Garcia’s a very talented and skillful player. The main reason he’s been playing so well is because of his selfless plays,” said Jarin on Sunday at Araneta Coliseum.

“We always know he can do a lot of things but he makes those selfless plays and sacrifices. He also takes good care of his body. That’s what makes him play better every game.”

The 34-year-old Garcia finished with 20 points on an efficient 58 percent shooting clip, missing just five of his 12 shots from the field.

Making his performance more impressive was he scored just four points in the opening period and went scoreless in the middle quarters before taking matters his own hands when it mattered most.

The former Far Eastern University standout erupted for 16 points in the fourth quarter as he repelled Blackwater’s repeated attempts at a comeback.

“Maybe my confidence is still there,” said a beaming Garcia after his squad improved to a 1-7 card.

“Every time coach puts me in the game, he knows that I’ll give my hundred percent. His only request from us yesterday was to give him a win. That’s what was on my mind and my motivation today,” he added.

Not only that it was a breakthrough victory for the Fuel Masters, but it was also a win that kept them in playoff contention in Group B.
