MANILA, Philippines— With Ray Parks back in the fray, National University hardly had any trouble in beating Perpetual Hep, 63-47, to claim the championship in the 19th Fr. Martin Summer Cup at the Trinity University of Asia Gym in Quezon City.

Parks, who missed the Bulldogs’ 67-63 win over the University of the Philippines in the semifinals due to a minor ankle injury, announced his return with 19 points to lead his team to its second Fr. Martin title in three years.

“The boys did what they’re supposed to do. They’re learning to deal with lapses in our game and keep their composure,” said NU coach Eric Altamirano.

The six-foot-four Parks was impressive but NU, which ended the tournament on a nine-game winning streak, also drew solid contributions from big man Alfred Aroga and playmaker Gelo Alolino.

Aroga and Alolino, who had 15 and 11 points respectively, keyed in a run in the third quarter where the Bulldogs ran away, 55-34, entering the final period. Alolino scored eight points during that crucial stretch alone.

Meanwhile, the San Beda Red Cubs retained their junior’s title after turning back rivals Letran Qres, 72-63 behind 17 points from Joshua Caracut.

In the women’s division, Vangie Soriano capped his 14-point effort after hitting two pressure-packed free throws to lift Far Eastern University over De La Salle, 48-46, as the Lady Tamaraws seized the crown. Camille Sambille led the FEU with 17 points.

The Altas, who edged the Adamson Falcons, 57-54, in the semis, struggled offensively with not even one player scoring in double digits. Justin Alano paced Perpetual Help with nine points.
