CEU, DLSZ, Poveda sweep opening-day matches

MANILA—Centro Escolar U, De La Salle Zobel and Poveda shone on the opening weekend of the 42nd WNCAA, winning all their basketball and volleyball matches to take the early lead in the country’s only tri-level league for women.

CEU kicked off the season with a 55-38 win over host Rizal Technological U at Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Saturday.

In the midget division, Poveda scored a 22-19 triumph over St. Paul Pasig while defending champion DLSZ downed Miriam, 33-22.

In volleyball games at the RTU gym Sunday, CEU stopped Philippine Women’s U, 25-17, 27-25, 25-15; Poveda bested La Salle Antipolo, 25-18, 25-19; and DLSZ, also the defending midget champion, downed St. Paul, 25-6, 25-8.

Other senior basketball matches saw San Beda Alabang best St. Scholastica, 44-38; Emilio Aguinaldo College survive University of Asia and the Pacific, 65-61; and PWU beat Miriam, 59-51.

Also winning their volleyball matches were Miriam over St. Jude, 25-11, 25-9 (midget); RTU over Miriam, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21; San Beda over St. Scholastica, 25-23, 25-20, 25-8; and UA&P over EAC, 25-14, 25-14, 25-13.

The opening ceremony will be aired over AKTV (IBC 13 and Sky Cable channel 15) today at 9 p.m.
