Gilas Pilipinas leads 65-56 over S. Korea after three quarters

MANILA, Philippines — Smart Gilas Pilipinas took the lead two minutes into the third and ended the quarter with a 65-56 edge over South Korea in their semifinal match Saturday in the 27th Fiba Asia men’s championships.

The Filipinos opened with an 8-0 run behind Jason Castro to give them a 47-39 lead with 6:02 in the third, then led by as many as 10, 63-53, with 1:21 left.

Marcus Douthit, who left for the dugout early before halftime, wasn’t on the bench at the start of the third but later returned with both his knees heavily wrappped.

At stake is a chance to meet Iran in the title round on Sunday along with the assured two slots to the 2014 Fiba Basketball World Cup.
