Garcia confident more triumphs on the horizon
MANILA—Don’t worry, the gold medals are in the pipeline.
That was the confident statement of Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia yesterday, saying the country’s Guangzhou Asian Games medal machinery is “still on track.”
“Let us not judge them too early, let’s give the athletes a chance to perform,” said Garcia who arrived Tuesday night from China. “Our golds are forthcoming.”
He added that so far the only gold that was expected but didn’t come was in the 8-ball singles of men’s billiards when Efren “Bata” Reyes and Roberto Gomez lost to Indian foes.
“That was the only expected gold that didn’t materialize so far.
The gold of Biboy (Rivera in men’s singles bowling) is unexpected so I guess that offset everything,” said Garcia.
Garcia said boxing can still yield one gold despite the loss of Charly Suarez, while taekwondo is good for at least one gold especially with Olympian Tshomlee Go and promising novice Butch Morrison gaining a bye.
He also cited reigning Asian champion Marestella Torres in long jump.
