MANILA, Philippines — As good of a player Army’s Jovelyn Gonzaga is, the 21-year-old spiker said her Shakey’s V-League Open Conference MVP award still came by surprise.
And Gonzaga nearly shed a tear as she received the highest individual plum Tuesday afternoon.
“I did not expect this. It’s so overwhelming,” Gonzaga said in Filipino, just moments after firing 15 points to lead Army past Air Force as the Lady Troopers moved a win away from taking third place.
The five-foot-nine Gonzaga also thanked her team as if she’s owing her MVP award to her teammates.
“They are counting on me during our matches,” Gonzaga added, also blessed for the opportunity being part of the Lady Troopers.
Apart from being named MVP, Gonzaga was also the conference’s Best Attacker.
Army fell a game shy of making the Finals but despite falling short, Gonzaga said the team did its best and for her, it’s what matters most.
“We did everything. We did our best so we are all satisfied with what we have achieved,” she said.
Gonzaga hopes to continue her form as the Lady Troopers look to knock off the Air Women on Sunday for bronze.
