MANILA, Philippines — Two female Filipino boxers settled for a bronze medal on Thursday while two others remained in the hunt of a precious gold medal in the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.
Joining earlier victor Nesthy Petecio in the final round was Josie Gabuco, who scored a huge unanimous win over Laos’ Sonrka Chanthavonrsa, 40-34, 40-36, 40-34, in the light flyweight category.
Gabuco, gold medalist winner in the previous edition of the biennial meet hosted by Myanmar for the first time in nearly five decades, will face an Indonesian foe on Friday as the final round gets underway.
Irish Magno, meanwhile, dropped a heartbreaking decision to Thailand’s Peamwilai Loapeam, 37-39, 38-38, 37-39, to bring home bronze.
Maricris Igam also suffered the same fate in flyweight division, losing to another Thai in Sopida Satumrum in semifinals of the bantamweight tie for a bronze finish.
