UP stuns FEU volleybelles; La Salle booters score

MANILA, Philippines — Also-ran University of the Philippines put Far Eastern University’s semifinal bid in peril with a plucky 26-24, 25-16, 16-25, 25-19 upset in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Sunday at Filoil Flying V Arena.

Kathy Bersola finished with 20 points, including six blocks, and Angeli Araneta added 15 to power the Lady Maroons to just their second win in 13 games.

The loss pushed the Lady Tamaraws down to a share of fourth at 6-7 with the Adamson Lady Falcons, who bowed to Dindin Santiago (21 points) and her National University Lady Bulldogs in a 15-25, 25-23, 25-20, 34-32 decision.

The Lady Tamaraws and the Lady Falcons are in a tight duel for the last semifinal berth with unbeaten La Salle (12-0), NU (12-1) and Ateneo (8-4) already assured of the top three spots.

In men’s football, Iñigo Gonzales scored in the 89th minute as La Salle edged NU, 1-0, at the end of the eliminations to arrange a semifinal duel with top-seeded FEU.

The Green Booters wound up tied with University of Santo Tomas with 17 points, but settled for fourth place after the tiebreak.

The Tigers will take on the No. 2 Maroons, who carved out a 3-1 triumph over Ateneo, which failed to advance to the Final Four after last year’s title romp.

Toting twice-to-beat incentives, the Tamaraws and the Maroons only need to win once to advance to the best-of-three finals.

In men’s volleyball, Michael Sudaria pumped in a career-high 30 points as Adamson outlasted UST, 25-21, 22-25, 28-26, 25-17, to keep solo fourth at 7-5.

La Salle stayed within striking distance at 6-6 after a 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21 upset of second running NU behind Reymark Woo and Red Christensen’s combined 40 points.
