JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius, who faces a murder trial next month, says he is consumed by sorrow on the first anniversary of the day that he fatally shot his girlfriend in his home.

Pistorius said in a statement released early Friday that he will carry the loss of Reeva Steenkamp and the trauma of the Valentine’s Day shooting for the rest of his life.

The trial of the Olympic athlete starts Mar. 3 in the capital, Pretoria. Prosecutors say 27-year-old Pistorius killed Steenkamp in the pre-dawn hours of Valentine’s Day after an argument; he says he shot Steenkamp by mistake, believing she was a nighttime intruder in his bathroom.
