FEU booters complete UAAP double
MANILA, Philippines—Finally rewarded for the revitalized program it started a few years ago, Far Eastern U completed a UAAP football championship double Sundaywith a sweep of the men and women’s finals at FEU Diliman pitch.
Jess Melliza struck in the 72nd minute as the Tamaraws subdued University of the Philippines, 1-0, in Game 2, capping a glorious day for FEU, which also swept University of Santo Tomas with a 2-1 win in the women’s finals earlier.
FEU is on track of sweeping the three football titles at stake this season with its boys’ high school side also in the finals.
The Tamaraws injected life to their program a few years back, hiring Korean coach Kim Chul Su and recruiting players that started playing together in the high school division.
The result was a slick passing and technically superior side that finally fulfilled their destiny this season.
Melliza headed home the title-clinching goal in the 72nd minute, capitalizing on some indecision by UP goalkeeper Ace Villanueva.
The Tamaraws were on attack-mode right from the get go, with Eric Giganto and Arnel Amita spurning some clear-cut chances in the first half. Given space inside the area, Melliza, who scored and assisted on another goal in the 4-1 victory in Game 1, headed the ball past an onrushing Villanueva and the Tamaraws held their ground in the final minutes.
It was FEU’s ninth title in the men’s division.
