MANILA, Philippines — De La Salle University is set to lift the UAAP general championship trophy for the second straight year.

La Salle wound up with 289 points — edging out perennial overall champion University of Santo Tomas — for the second consecutive season after ruling five events.

DLSU, which topped men’s and women’s basketball, men’s taekwondo, table tennis and women’s chess, will be officially crowned overall champion on Saturday during the UAAP Season 76 closing ceremonies at Century Park Hotel Grand Ballroom in Manila.

Despite winning only two events, UST still came in second with 274 points after finishing second in men’s basketball, men’s beach volleyball, taekwondo, athletics, women’s beach volleyball, fencing and athletics.

University of the Philippines ended up in distant third with 235 points after ruling women’s swimming and table tennis and runner-up finishes in seven events.

Fresh off an improbable conquest in women’s volleyball, Ateneo came in fourth in the overall tally after topping five events.

On the strength of its athletics team, Far Eastern University also bagged five championships but found itself in fifth place after not fielding in teams in swimming and judo.

National University, winners in men’s volleyball, beach volleyball and both divisions in tennis,  finished in sixth while University of the East, double champions in fencing, ended up in seventh and Adamson in eighth with a lone championship in softball.

La Salle, which recently muffed a golden opportunity in women’s volleyball, will bag its third general championship overall.

UST still by far, holds the most overall championships with 39 followed by FEU’s 16.
