Arcilla, Tierro survive first round

MANILA, Philippines — Johnny Arcilla and Patrick John Tierro again made a strong case for their inclusion in the Philippine Davis Cup team.

The battle-scarred veterans barged into the second round of the $15,000 Olivarez Cup-Philippine men’s international tennis championship with contrasting wins Wednesday at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The 34-year-old Arcilla outlasted world-ranked Thai Chayanon Kaewsuto, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 4-1 (retired), while Tierro downed compatriot Calvin Charles Canlas, 7-5, 6-2.

Four other local stars bowed out, however.

Jeson Patrombon dropped a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) decision to world No. 985 Yu Cheng-yu of Chinese Taipei. Elbert Anasta also failed to make the next round, bowing to  Thai Punn Bodhidatta, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.

Marc Reyes was eliminated by second seed Ti Chen of Chinese Taipei, 6-4, 6-1, while Jurence Mendoza, 17, was booted out by Ivo Klec of Slovakia, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
