PH boys split opening matches in Street Child World Cup

MANILA, Philippines — Team Philippines split its assignments in the opening of the boys’ group of the 2014 Street Child World Cup held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Filipino boys opened with a 1-0 win over Nicaragua but absorbed a 0-4 clobbering from Burundi, which earned them three points in group 2.

In a tweet, team leader and head coach Roy Moore said that the boys can still make it to the knockout round even with two games left.

Philippines is also bracketed with Tanzania and Argentina in the group stages of the 10-day event.

Next on the boys’ list is Tanzania, which the Filipinos will battle on Thursday (Manila time).

Their girl counterparts, meanwhile, are hoping to replicate their strong showing against South Africa, which ended in a 9-0 rout last Monday, against El Salvador today [Wednesday].

Organized with Save the Children, the Street Child World Cup is a global movement aimed at giving street children the equal protection and opportunities that all children are entitled to.

According to the event’s official website, over 230 children from 19 nations are part of the meet, which also includes a festival of arts and a conference for children’s rights.
