MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University survived a gritty stand from the Philippine Under-18 Team, hacking out a 74-73 decision for its second straight victory Monday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Raymar Jose and Mike Tolomia teamed up for 23 points as the Tamaraws withstood a late surge from the young Nationals.
“They’re a good team and very talented,” FEU coach Nash Racela said of the U18 boys, who joined the summer league to boost their preparation for two international tournaments this year.
Naascu champ Centro Escolar debuted with a 76-67 win over Emilio Aguinaldo College while Lyceum clipped Mapua, 92-83.
The Pirates came out sizzling with 12 three-pointers, including three from Dexter Zamora, who finished with a game-high 24 points.
Rhoel Maconocido chipped in 14 points and Joseph Gabayani collected 13 points to help the Pirates zoom to a double-digit lead, 77-64.
The Scorpions also got off to a strong debut behind Alfred Batiño, who fired 15 points.
“This is a new experience for us,” said CEU coach Egay Macaraya. “But I think we’re showing that we’re not the old CEU team than can be easily beaten [by the UAAP and NCAA teams].”
Rod Ebondo had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds for CEU.
