NU Pep Squad stakes cheerdance title today
NATIONAL University tries to prove one more time that it can topple cheerdance’s big guns.
Hoping for another perfect execution, the NU Pep Squad shoots for back-to-back UAAP Cheerdance championship at 2 p.m. against a strong field led by perennial favorite University of the Philippines at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Every year, our routine evolves,” said NU coach Ghicka Bernabe. “We know that the other schools have new things to show. But we’ll also come out with something different.”
Article continues after this advertisementNU knows it needs to deliver another unique performance for a repeat of last year’s shocker, where it spoiled the UP Pep Squad’s bid for a fourth straight crown.
“We’re confident of our chances because we’ve been doing well in practice,” said Bernabe, but added the team made late adjustments due to recent injuries.
NU also aims for another championship in the group stunts side event, where star gymnast Claire Cristobal showcased her verve and flexibility in last year’s routine.
Article continues after this advertisementAfter settling for a runner-up finish last year, the UP crew, known for its perky numbers and quirky hair styles, aims to reclaim the crown and capture a record ninth overall title.
Traditional favorite Far Eastern University also hopes to get back in the top three after slipping to fourth last season.
La Salle, the surprise third placer last year, vows for another solid outing, while University of Santo Tomas’ Salinggawi Dance Troupe, tied with UP for the most number of crowns at eight, vows to rebound after a worst finish of seventh place the last time.
