MANILA, Philippines—It took a high-scoring duo of the PLDT Turbo Boosters to clobber the Meralco Power Attackers 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-19) in their matchup at the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 3rd Conference at the Arena in San Juan Thursday evening.
Suzanne Roces and Gretchel Soltones had 14 points apiece to lead PLDT over their sister team and claim a 1-0 win-loss start.
Meralco, though, fell to a 0-2 hole to start the conference.
PLDT head coach Roger Gorayeb said their win was “okay” since they did not have any proper practice before the match.
“We did not have a proper practice, just light sessions that some of the players did,” Gorayeb, who just arrived from London on Thursday last week, said.
Gorayeb met his team last Friday.
With the scores at 20-18, Soltones went into her groove scoring three straight points to put the Turbo Boosters up 23-18, puncturing the Meralco defense.
Meralco then collapsed on their own with a team error that gave PLDT the match point, 24-18, and a service error from Concon De Guzman gave the Turbo Boosters their 25th point.
PLDT only fielded 11 players against Meralco’s 13 as Luane Latigan was on the sick bay.
Not a single player from the Meralco side reached double figures with Stephanie Mercado and Maica Morada the nearest ones with nine and eight points respectively.
