Chot Reyes disputes report of Gilas disbandment

MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes denied that the team has been disbanded, claiming that he got the assurance from Philippine basketball’s top bosses that Gilas’ agenda would continue.

Reyes, in a statement, said Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas President Manny V. Pangilinan and SBP Executive-Director “assured” him that no disbandment among the national basketball team happened.

“I have been assured by both SBP President Manny V. Pangilinan and SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios that the Gilas Pilipinas program has not been disbanded,” Reyes said in a statement.

In an earlier report, a new committee to oversee the screening and selection of the new batch of the national basketball team dissolved the Gilas program.

Reyes added that the Gilas program would “continue under a regime of broader consultation with the basketball community, which I support.”

On the matter on whether he would still coach the team, Reyes said that it is up to the SBP board to decide.
