The rookie squad owned by Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao pulled off an early surprise in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup yesterday at Ynares Sports Arena.
MP Hotel spoiled Wangs Basketball’s bid for the solo lead with an 87-70 rout anchored on JR Sumido, Jessie Collado and Rene Pacquiao, a cousin of the eight-division world boxing champion.
Cagayan Valley and Jumbo Plastic slipped past separate opponents in the other games.
Sumido unloaded 10 of his 14 points in the second quarter, where the MP Warriors set the tone for the upset by erecting a 42-28 lead.
Collado added 13 points while Pacquiao posted 11 points and 10 rebounds.
In the first game, Michael Mabulac and Don Trollano knocked in clutch baskets as Cagayan Valley held off MJM M-Builders, 94-86.
Jumbo Plastic, meanwhile, averted an upset behind Joseph Terso and Dexter Maiquez for a 79-74 victory over Bread Story-Lyceum.
