Rey Madrid out as UP men’s basketball head coach
MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines has parted ways with its men’s basketball head coach Rey Madrid.
Ronwaldo Dizer, the dean of UP College of Human Kinetics, announced the dismissal of Madrid Monday.

He was our former player and has made a name for himself in the field of architecture,” Dizer said. “It has been very difficult for him to make some sacrifices. The UP coaching job requires a full-time job you cannot work full-time for it without neglecting the other one.”
“The UP-MVP coaching program is very demanding,” Dizer added. “Protecting the interests of UP-MVP and coach Rey’s career, the CHK council decided that coach Rey will finish his contract.”
UP finished 1-13 in one season under Madrid. Madrid will officially vacate the head-coaching post after his contract expires by the end of December.
Article continues after this advertisementDizer also said that UP’s search for its next coach starts Tuesday. Madrid will work with the management during the initial phase of the search, according to Dizer.
“To pave the way for a smooth transition, Madrid has agreed for us to start the search for our new coach from November 4 to November 28.”
Dizer also said that Globalport head coach Pido Jarencio will be part of the search committee.
Dizer said the search committee will have to “come up with the top five applicants” and each candidate will be interviewed.
