Local aces, Yan clinch twin crowns
Local aces Anica Cari and Joshua Torres, along with Master Yan, nailed two titles each in the Palawan Pawnshop-Palawan Express Pera Padala regional age-group tournament at Baybay Tennis Club in Leyte yesterday.
Cari bested No. 2 Joy Camille Sanico, 4-2, 4-2, to capture the girls’ 14-and-under crown. Earlier, she annexed the 12-U diadem with a 4-1, 4-1 romp over Bea Pelias in the event sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association.
Yan stopped Aeron Carungay, 5-4(3), 4-1, in the boys’ 18-U finals after wearing down Paulo Loreto, 4-1, 1-4 (10-8), to pocket the 16-U crown.
Torres beat Chyme Arradaza, 4-0, 4-1, (boys’ 14-U) and Aaron Suaron, 4-0, 4-0, (12-U).
Top seed Ghylem Basalo bagged the 10-unisex title, holding off Samjosh Ramos, 4-0, 5-3, while Sanico pocketed the girls’ 18-U crown with a 3-5, 4-1 (10-6) victory over Ma. Delrose Duran.
Action resumes this weekend in Maasin, Leyte.
