Selangor: Arevalo halts Superal

ABBY Arevalo snapped a year-long title spell with a victory in the RSGC AmBank Junior Amateur Open Championship Thursday, beating last year’s winner Princess Superal by two shots with a closing two-under 70 at Royal Selangor Golf Club’s Old Course.

Arevalo leaned on a fine start to put one over the player who had served as inspiration and yardstick for Team ICTSI-The Country Club for her outstanding feats.

“I have been waiting for a good break and this week is just the perfect time,” said Arevalo, whose last victory came at the SPCGA tournament in the United States last year when she beat Pauline del Rosario in a playoff.

With earlier rounds of 71 and 73, Arevalo wound up with 214, two shots ahead of Superal, who closed with a 71 in the 18-and-under section of the 54-hole tournament.

Sofia Chabon made it a twin victory for the team as she bagged the 15-and-under title with a similar 214 aggregate after a 69, besting Malaysian Geraldine Wong (71) by seven shots.

“Abby is putting premium on practice and her hard work is paying off, while Sofia has improved a lot and we expect her to contend from hereon,” said ICTSI-TCC coach Bong Lopez.

One-up on Superal after 36 holes, Arevalo birdied four of the first 10 holes and never yielded command.
