JRU rips Cebu-based USJ-R for third win in Filoil Cup

Jose Rizal University ripped  a hapless University of San Jose-Recoletos, 75-58, to get its third-straight win in 2015 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup Wednesday afternoon at the Arena in San Juan.

It was a downpour of offense coming off intense pressure defense from the Heavy Bombers as they outscored the Jaguars in the second half, 42-26.

Heavy Bombers head coach Vergel Meneses challenged his team to bring the energy and bring the fight to the Jaguars after a poor first half.

“We had a bad start, we had no energy,” said Meneses whose team notched a 3-0 record before flying to Thailand on Friday for a pre-season tournament. “We don’t have what we call the push, we don’t have the aggressiveness.”

Returning Heavy Bomber Paolo Pontejos answered the call with a personal 7-0 run to start the second half that put the Heavy Bombers up 58-45.

It all ballooned to 69-48 for JRU with 3:22 remaining in the game that pretty much doomed the Jaguars.

Cris Dela Paz had 21 points to lead JRU while Pontejos added 13.

Miguel Gastador led USJ-R with 17 points and seven boards.
